When considering your cover it is important to remember that the old adage “never judge a book by its cover” is not always accurate. A well presented book cover is often the thing that catches people’s eye and ensures that they pick the book up from the shelf.
4selfpublishing have provided a number of cover templates that can be used for your book, any of which can be personalised with your own image, book title and author name, as well as the book synopsis on the back cover. If you choose to use this option there are a number of considerations that must be remembered:
Ensure that you are authorised to use any images or quotes on your book cover.
If supplying an image, always supply them as a 600dpi TIF file as this will ensure the best quality.
Never use images downloaded from the internet as these are nearly always 72dpi images and, though they may look OK on your screen, will print very poorly.
Avoid using jpgs or bmps as these are compressed files. Compressing a files reduces its size and makes it easier to send via email, but downgrades the overall quality resulting in a poorer print quality.
4selfpublishing can also design a professional cover for your book according to your own personal brief. Though this is a more costly option, it will result in a completely unique cover designed specifically to compliment your book.

Book sizes vary considerably, but the most common sizes are as follows:
234 x 156mm
216 x 140mm
210 x 148mm
4selfpublishing would normally recommend 210 x 148 as an optimal size.
